Cultural Afternoon

7 of us in the DG went to Thailand this afternoon and spent about 2 hours eating and shopping there.

Although I have not been to Thailand personally, a trip down to Golden Mile Complex along Beach Road in Singapore makes one feel like you are in Thailand. Every corner you turn, you will see a Thai and it really seems like you are in Thailand! As we turned into the carpark, we saw cohorts of Thai people (mainly men) sitting around on the ground. They looked like they were just hanging out and chilling out in the covered carpark. They probably came to Singapore to work and would gather in a group together on a Sunday afternoon to chill out and relax.

Lunch was at one of the many eateries in the shopping complex itself. Under M's recommendation, we tried the famous mango salad, papaya salad, sticky rice, grilled chicken (this is yummy!!) and red milk tea. We also had pad thai from another stall. I think this is probably the most authentic pad thai I had in Singapore! The sliced beef we had was extremely spicy! Even the seasoned chilli-lovers amongst us had to drink water to relieve the heat in our mouths!

As we were having lunch, there was some mui thai sparing session just outside the eatery (can't remember the name of the "Beer House" but it was #01-73) we were at. It reminds me of the combat classes I used to go in the gym. Hmm... I do miss the kicks and punches *ouch* and the roundhouse kicks and elbow punches.

Where shopping is concerned, you can also find all sorts of Thai products and food in the complex. But do be careful as some things are cheaper at our regular supermarkets than the Thai supermarket at GMC. Strangely so, I also found quite a variety of Korean snacks, ginseng tea and other food products at the Thai supermarket. M brought us around the complex, as if we are touring in Thailand. The complex is rather old... somewhat reminds me of the older buildings in Chinatown. There were a couple of interesting shops, like the "C&V Marriage Centre" and various many cheap Thai massage palours. If anyone is interested in marrying a Thai woman, I suppose the C&V ("come and visit"???) Marriage Centre can be of some help. Massages can also be as cheap as S$8!! Very interesting places and people there are at GMC. Admittedly this was the first time I stepped into the complex. I had probably walked past the exterior of the building a few times but have not been inside the building.

As if going to Thailand was not enough, some of us adjourned to Kampong Glam for a little stroll amidst the crowd who are there to celebrate the start of Ramadan. We later set foot into Sleepy Sam's and chilled out there. Sleepy Sam's is located at one of the shophouses along Bussorah Pedestrian Mall in Kampong Glam leading to the famous Sultan Mosque. Chatting and laughing away, we concluded the Sunday afternoon with a common wish - that we don't need to go back to work the next day.....

It was "Go East" for a 'Westerner' like me. Last Saturday, 3 DGs from the east of Singapore gathered on a warm yet nice afternoon for a time of fun and fellowship... and oh! the food of course ;)

Leaders of the 3 DGs - L, N and M had planned this car rally and came up with the clues, questions and even the winning prize! The winning team walked away with a restaurant dining voucher for 4 persons. I was teamed with 3 other girls from different DGs. Being the driver, my main role is to drive us around safely to the various locations so that we can collect our answers from the destination and to snap a photo of the venue as proof that we have been there. The time limit was 3.5 hours but my team took 3 hours and 45 minutes covering 12 out of the 13 places. The winning team was really good. They covered 13 places in 2 hours and 45 minutes and including some time for pies at the pie shop in Siglap!! How did they manage to do that? Well, its ok that my team didn't win. I enjoyed the fellowship and the fun we had. We spent some time in Joo Chiat area searching for our locations... I think after this, I surely got to know the east quite a bit more. But with all the driving, the excitement, the brain juices put to work, I was really tired by the time we finished.

Here are the clues for you to attempt for yourselves. I decided not to include the answers and the photos to the places. If any of you would like answers to the clues, you may leave your email address for me to email you ;)

Clue 1: You won’t find no dead Indians and Chinese here in this part of Siglap.
Who is the famous doctor who resides here permanently? (Hint: check with the only living soul there)

Clue 2: This low-lying district 15 estate has a pie shop and a primary school and floods when it rains.
Name six streets in this estate that have something to do with... the Opera!

Clue 3: Ang Moh store that makes the clouds swallow face in Tembeling Road
Who is feature on the article 'I Love my Crabs' pasted on the stall?

Clue 4: Pertama Laksa mana?
Find not the First Admiral but the address of the signboarded Original Katong Laksa stall.

Clue 5: Get your spring rolls at Quynh Giao Quan An Viet Nam (Hint: Little Miss Saigons brought media attention to this old heritage-rich neighbourhood a few years back)
What does the shop next to this eatery sell?

Clue 6: Cannons in a fortified Fort once faced the sea here... nowadays, people just bring their doggies here to run.
Look for a sign that will tell you what the word 'Katong' means.

Clue 7: Originally named Shiang Kai Sek Secondary School, this very 'cheena' school boasts of green temple roofs and its over own lake.
How many arches are there at the main entrance?

Clue 8: Where Taleban fighters would flock to for meals in Tampines.
How many kiddy rides are there outside this location and what is the colour of the elephant?

Clue 9: Also know as OCH, it is reputedly the most haunted place in Singapore. Sealand will get you there. Don't miss 203SQN.
How many staff lots do these old grounds have?

Clue 10: A fellow Synod brother worships in this church where 8 Fowls roams freely.
When are their prayer meetings held?

Clue 11: Lonely Planeteers! Chew your betels at this hostel in Joo Chiat and wash it down with a Slurpee next door.
How many fingers does each mascot have?

Clue 12: Where budgies go 'cheap cheap' when they take flight.
Which companies operate there?

Final Clue: Meet at the Corner which serves iced cold beer from the world over. Charlie runs this joint in this far eastern spot near where transgendered denizens of the night hang out.

Announcing the answers.... (drum roll...)

Prize presentation to the winning team - Meal voucher at Alfredo's Restaurant!

Kudos to the leaders for organising this eastern journey. Anyone wants to help me organise a "Go West"?

t

Went shopping with a guy friend to help select a Birthday pressie for his g/f. Went to Bikies shop to give suggestions and to be a model on the various designs and patterns of the casual shoe wear. We also went to a couple of jellewery shops to see if there is a nice little cross pendant to get for her, as it would be a nice significance for her since she accepted Christ some months ago.

At one of the jellewery shop, we saw a diamond cross, which was almost exactly the same as what I am wearing. I got it as a gift a year ago, as a gift of appreciation from an Indonesian couple for my help to them. Then I was surprised because I didn't expect to receive such a pricey gift, or even a gift for my ministry to them. The diamond cross from the shop's display was sparkling bright but mine is a little dull due to my wearing everyday. The shop attendant offered to clean up the necklace and pendant for me so that it will achieve the sparkle effect. I was a bit hesitant because it seems a bit 'pai sei' if my friend was not buying the pendant. I relented and my necklace came back sparkling clean and bright, looks as good as new! But my friend decided to not get the cross and so I did feel a bit 'pai sei' about it. However, the shop attendant was all smiles even as I left the shop. "What good service", I thought to myself - when a customer did not buy anything from you, cleaning service was provided free of charge and with a smile! Eventually, my friend bought the Birkies.

This morning, I was in the lift with a doctor. As we walked out of the lift, he suddenly asked me if I am a Christian. My answer was a "Yes". He commented that I have a nice cross pendant. I suppose such question was not a norm and I somehow didn't know how to react except to return with a smile :) The necklace and pendant probably stood out quite a bit after the cleaning yesterday and it had attracted some attention. As I walked to my office, I figured that I should have returned that same question to him - if he is a Christian? At least if he isn't, I can have a chance to share gospel with him or something...

In this day and age, wearing a cross can just be a fashion statement. In the 3 jellewery shops I went to, there were quite a few selection of cross pendants, mostly in diamond. Someone who wears a cross may not be a Christian. He/she may just like the idea of wearing a cross, maybe also because it makes the wearer looks 'holy'. Why am I wearing a cross? Well, I am wearing the diamond cross because I got it as a gift and because I like it - neat and classic. About 10 years ago, a good friend of mine gave me a yellow gold cross pendant for my birthday. On my 21st birthday, my cousin gave me one in white gold. So this diamond cross is the 3rd cross pendant that I own. I used to think that because I like to wear a cross, I will wear it. I wear it because I am a Christian and since I was gonna wear a pendant, a cross pendant would be nice. (Wearing a cross pendant doesn't make me a Christian. It also doesn't mean all Christians must wear a cross pendant.) This morning's little incidence reminded me that by wearing a cross, others will also see that I wear a cross and it seems to say "this person is a Christian". This means that my testimony is important. Wearing a cross or not, may not be that important. But the way I live my life and conduct myself, tells others who I am. Do I want to be seen as a child of God and a reflection of Him? Or someone whom others cannot believe it if I tell them I am a Christian? Gives me some food for thought... what impression am I giving to the people around me? How am I living my life? And how I am prepared to share the gospel to whoever, wherever I am?

Hmm....

This Morning's Prayer

I prayed for you this morning...

Psalm 86
A prayer of David.

Hear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you.

Have mercy on me, O Lord for I call to you all day long. Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you.

Hear my prayer, O LORD; listen to my cry for mercy. In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me. Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours. All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name. For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.

Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths of the grave.

The arrogant are attacking me, O God; a band of ruthless men seeks my life — men without regard for you. But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

Turn to me and have mercy on me; grant your strength to your servant and save the son of your maidservant. Give me a sign of your goodness, that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Retrospective

That's me!!! I mean the baby on the right ;) Yup I had little hair compared to my cousin (the other baby). She was born a few hours (difference of one day) later than me. Saw this photo whilst tiding my things. The more interesting thing to notice is that the grown up me now, looks very much like my pretty mum in the photo! :p

Memories...

I am probably a bit slow to become a "Winter Sonata" fan and addicted to watch the soapy drama series. Blame it on me that I went into a shop to check out the availability of the dvd series for a friend who would like to own it and watch it. But before I pass it to my friend, I thought I might as well enjoy the series first... to discover why this series caught the eyes and time of many who are crazy after BYJ and after this romantic lovey dovey soapy drama series.

In a bid of not to spoil the story for those who have not saw it, I shall not disclose too much here. In barely a week's time, I finished the 20 episodes in 6 discs. I teared less than I thought I would - about 4-5 times in total. I did not wail nor cry, only shed a few tears.... I must admit that the series is indeed rather dramatic but there are many sweet and touching moments. It is dramatic in the ways where the couple meet, separate, meet and separate again and again and again... It is sweet at the occasions when they went on dates, had fun, enjoyed each other's company and the simple words of love and appreciation they say.

The story is a bit unrealistic at some parts. Such love is also almost impossible. Yes it is sweet, romantic and warming. The kind of love portrayed is probably what many people are looking for but absent and so become suckers of romantic movies as such :p Yet I like it as it is a good break, different from the Hollywood and Singaporean type of drama/movies. It probably has to do with the cultural differences too. I probably have not heard a couple say so many "sorry"s and "thank you"s to each other. The way they relate is formal, respectful, yet personal, genuine, sincere and affectionate.

I love the sceneries in Winter. Makes me want to go Korea to experience winter myself. I like winter season too, however I have not been to a place which snows... Another thing I like about Winter is the songs and the instrumental pieces that was played. The music and songs were put in the right places to bring out the intended emotion and mood. I am humming the tunes now!

Here's one of the songs that has been played many times in the drama:

My memory

I remember very moment with you
I close my eyes
And see our memories together
You’re far away
Where I can’t even reach you
I didn’t even let you know how much I love you
I never thought this could happen
I never thought I could see you again

I never thought I’m still in love with you
I want to tell you
I will love you forever
If its not too late

Stay here with me forever
If I can’t see you again
I want to forget everything about you
Whenever I feel like laughing
Thoughts of you makes me cry even more
I can’t seem to do anything because of you

Every time I miss you, my heart breaks into pieces
I truly want to forget
No matter how hard I try I can’t forget you
I never knew how hard it is to love someone

Such a long time
You are always in my heart
Although the time passes
Although you're far away from me

You are still in my heart
I never thought this could happen
I never thought I could see you again

I’m still in love with you
Let me tell you
I wanna love you forever
If its not too late
Stay with me forever

My memory
I remember everything about that moment
I can remember the tiniest detail when I close my eyes
You're far away
Somewhere where I can't reach you
You didn't even say you loved me
Or tell me to wait for you

I didn't know that I'd meet you like this again
I never thought I still love you
I hope its not too late to tell you
I want to love you forever
If its not too late, stay with me forever

I don't think I have become a fan of BYJ like many aunties have. But I do agree that he does have some charm. I prefer his carefree smile than his cool and aloof smile. CJW has a sweet smile. Hmm... which is my next Korean drama?

Good Heart

Went for a free cholesterol screening which my company offered to its employees and family members. Brought my parents and sister for the screening this morning.

We all took turns and had our fingers poked for the test. My test results:
TC - 183mg/dL (desirable- below 200, borderline - 200-239, high risk - above 240)
HDL - 66 mg/dL (desirable/optimal - above 60, borderline - 40-59, high risk - below 40)
LDL - N/A (desirable - below 100, near optimal - 100-129, borderline 130-159, high risk - above 60)
TGL - less than 45mg/dl (desirable - below 150, borderline - 150-199, high risk - above 200)

My cholesterol levels are excellent! Compared to my last screening done in March 2002, it has gone down to a better level. My TC was higher at 201mg/dL, LDL 126mg/dL, HDL 67mg/dL and TGL 39mg/dL. Today's results seem to show that my cholesterol levels have either maintained or improved. Before I got my results today (I was the last one in my family), I was told that my levels would be similar to theirs (generally in the good range but LDL and TGL levels were a little high especially for my parents). Surprisingly, my levels were
significantly better. I was exercising quite a bit from 2004 to late 2005. I have been rather slack since this year because I did not continue my gym membership. Exercise has since been almost nil. However I have began to take omega 3 fish oils for the last 8-9 months. I believe that helped a lot! My TGL level is so so low. (I'm not sure if my LDL level was undetectable because it was too low or it simply cannot register)

Hmm, I think the omega fish oils I'm taking really quite help. I took it because I know it helps for the health of my joint other than the heart. I have a lot of knee problems so other than glucosamine, I thought I will also take omega 3 oils. My knee is since better, cholesterol levels are good and my skin has become better too! For a few months, I have been having bad fat zits on my chin. Ever since taking omega oil, they have slowly cleared up! The zits have not been back since. The antiflammatory effects of omega has helped :)

Omega or not, stay healthy by eating a balance diet and exercise 3 times a week. Hmm.... am I saying this for myself or for you???

"My Dear"

My goose pimples rise and I cringe when people calls me "my dear" or "dear". I'm talking about people who are not close to me and calls me that. Especially you know that they call you by that name because they want a favour from you, or that they are trying to bridge the gap so that they can be closer to you to be friends with you, usually for their advantage only. You know that they don't really think that you are their "dear" but they are kinda of just using the term loosely. I find that this cheapens the word and the meaning of it as a term of endearment. My family don't even address me by "dear", although a couple of my closer friends do :) I cringe all the more when people whom I don't quite like calls me that. I just go eeeks! I don't want to be your "dear"!! Help!!.... And I really want to literally run away from them!!!

(Just as I am blogging this entry, one of them called me on the phone! But for this time, I'm not her "dear". Phew!)

Missed Call

Was concentrating on my work in the office when my mobile rang. I let it ring for 2-3 times before I wanted to pick it up. I know that it is probably not someone I know very well as I have different ringing tunes for different groups of people. Before I could answer the call, the fella hung up. The number that I missed is unfamiliar to me. However, immediately I rang that same number back. This was our conversation:

Me: Hello, anyone called? (Don't know why I didn't mentioned my name)
Caller: Yes
Me: Who is this speaking?
Caller: You make a guess
Me: Erm.... E?
Caller: You make a guess. ....... ...... ......
Me: Sorry I can't hear you very well. You sound very 'echo-y'
Caller: Ok why don't you call me back again?
Me: Ok.

(Called the same number back)
Me: Hello, so who are you?
Caller: Make a guess
Me: Erm, I give up. I don't want to guess anymore (He kinda sounded like my former boyfriend from 10 years ago)
Caller: Ok let me ask you - if you are married or have a boyfriend right, you... ... then you will .... ... ... ... right? ("..." means I didn't catch what he said)
Me: Sorry I still can't hear you properly. Can you speak up louder and clearer?
Caller: If you are married or have a boyfriend right, you... ... then you will .... ... ... ... right?
(The above went on for a couple more times and I sensed something is wrong)
Me: (Sounding irritated) I still can't hear you. If you are not telling me who you are, I am not interested to talk to you.
Caller: You guess lah!
Me: Sorry I don't want to play anymore. I'm gonna hang up if you are not telling me who you are.
Caller: Ok, remember I met you last week and you ask me to call you?
Me: NO!
Caller: Remember I met you last week and you ask me to call you? I'm J.
Me: J? I don't recall. What is your surname?
Caller: You don't remember? Ok lah, when you remember me then you call me back.

This is irritating!! I hung up the phone, half wondering if it was a prank call or someone whom I really know. I figured that it probably was a prank call, or that he had called the wrong number. I mean... if its my friend, he would know if I am married or have a boyfriend?! Moreover I don't recall meeting anyone last week and asking him/her to call me. I don't have many people I know by the name of J. The few whom I can recall does not sound like that and certainly won't be so 'boh liao' (hokkien for 无聊; nonsense; bored) to do something like that. Even if it was my former boyfriend, he doesn't have my mobile number and certainly also not so 'boh liao'. If he is really someone I know, why don't he stop playing the guessing game and identify himself clearly?

I thought that prank calls are what only young punks will do. I recalled getting some when I was a teenager. I was doing a temp job during my school holidays and got to know some people. I think 1-2 of the guys gave my number to their guy friends to make prank calls to me to tease me. They are somewhat harmless but they will come across as trying to know me or express interest in me. I was not that naive to be taken in. Nothing came out of those conversations. Come to think about it, it was all so silly and childish!

The next time anyone who calls me, I won't be so kind to him if I sense he is a potential prank caller and refusing to acknowledge himself. What a waste of my time to entertain this caller today!!

Cake Recipes

As promised in my previous posting, here are the recipes of the cakes I baked last weekend. Go try them! It is not that difficult to bake :) it can be quite a therapeutic exercise. Hope you will enjoy the results! :)

Banana Walnut Cake
(makes 2 loaf tins or about 24 muffin-sized cakes)
Preparation time: 10-15 mins
Baking time: ~ 45 mins

250g butter

1 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla essence
4 medium bananas
100g walnuts
1 tsp baking soda
150ml milk
2 cup self-raising flour
2 tsps dark rum (optional)

Preparation and Notes:
1. Soften the butter so that it is easier to beat. The fastest way is to put it in microwave oven for say 30 secs (if you have just brought it out of the fridge). Be careful not to melt it!
2. If the eggs are big, 2 will be sufficient.
3. Mash up the bananas. If smaller ones, use 5-6 or up to your preference. For me, I like a little more than enough :) No banana essence is added so sufficient bananas are important to have that banana taste.
4. Walnuts can be either left as whole, chopped or crushed... depends on individuals' preference. I like it chopped but when I'm lazy, I just throw in the whole walnuts.
5. Sieve the self-raising flour and baking soda.
6. You can substitute sugar for brown sugar. If you like it less sweet, then add less than 1 cup.
7. Rum makes the cake a little more tastier. Without it is fine too.

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180 degree celsius.
2. Using a beater (handheld ones are easier to use) mix the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until the mixture is well mixed or pale yellow in colour.
3. Add in the eggs and vanilla essence. Mix well.
4. Using a metal spoon, add in the mashed bananas and mix well.
5. Add the walnuts and mix well.
6. Using the metal spoon, fold in a third of the sieved flour (with baking soda in it) and a third of the milk with the 8-figure method, i.e. folding and mixing and 'drawing' 8 with the spoon as you fold in. Repeat the same with the remaining flour and milk. Ensure that they are mixed properly. The result should be quite smooth.
7. Add the rum if you prefer.
8. Place mixture into the load tins or muffin size trays. If you wish, you can place some sliced bananas on top to enhance the look :)
9. Bake them for about 45 mins in the preheated oven. Check if the cakes are ready by poking a wooden stick (toothpick will do the trick too) into the middle of the cake. If the stick comes out clean, then it means the cake is done!

Almond Blueberry Cake
(makes 2 loaf tins or about 15 muffin-sized cakes)
Preparation time: 5-10 mins
Baking time: ~ 45 mins

200g butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp almond essence
2 eggs
100g grounded (or chopped) almonds
100g blueberries
1 cup plain flour

Preparation and Notes:
(Similar to that of the banana walnut cake above)

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180 degree celsius.
2. Using a beater, mix the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until the mixture is well mixed or pale yellow in colour.
3. Add in the eggs and vanilla essence. Mix well.
4. Using a metal spoon, add in the almonds and mix well.
5. Add the blueberries and mix well.
6. Using the metal spoon, fold in a third of the sieved flour and a third of the milk with the 8-figure method. Repeat the same with the remaining flour and milk.
7. Place mixture into muffin size trays or cake tin.
9. Bake them for about 45 mins in the preheated oven.
